The Heart & Soul of Cornerstone of Southern California: 40 Years of Growth
Dr. Michael Stone's journey in addiction medicine began in 1969 when, at 26, he became the medical director of Canada's first alcohol and drug treatment center in a med-surg hospital. This experience set the foundation for his life's work.
In 1975, Dr. Stone moved to Southern California, joining the University of California, Irvine as an Assistant Professor in Family Medicine. During this time, he began working at The Care Unit Hospital of Orange, eventually becoming its Medical Director. There, he collaborated with renowned addiction specialist Dr. Joseph Pursch and helped train the initial staff of the Betty Ford Center.
Recognizing the need for post-acute care, Dr. Stone founded Cornerstone of Southern California in 1984. Initially a residential treatment program, Cornerstone quickly obtained state licensure and Joint Commission accreditation. Over the years, Dr. Stone has treated an estimated 50,000 patients, with more than half receiving care at Cornerstone.
As a family-run business, Cornerstone operates under Dr. Stone's continued leadership as Founder, Chairman, and Chief Medical Officer. His children - Samantha, Simon, and Tim Stone - have each worked for the company for over 20 years and serve on the executive committee. The leadership team is further strengthened by CEO Phil Kosanovich, MBA, and Executive Director Tami Campbell, both of whom are in long-term recovery themselves.
Cornerstone takes pride in its independence from outside investors and its commitment to delivering compassionate care and clinical excellence. The heart and soul of Cornerstone lie in the dedication and hard work of its staff, who strive daily to provide the highest quality care to patients and their loved ones.
